The action was fast and fun on Sunday at the Sechelt Airport as the Sunshine Coast Drag Racing Association presented its May drag racing event.

The weather co-operated and the crowds enthusiasm made for a great day of action.

The winners included: Tom Sealey in street machine, Peter Stanley-Clarke in super street, Shawn Boyd in street rod, Matt Kennedy in hot rod and Al Cook in the exhibition class. The runners-up in each class also received trophies. They included Stephen Hoops in street machine, Timothy Smith in super street, Neale Crombie in street rod, Shawn Boyd in hot rod and Will McLennan in exhibition.

Other highlights of the day's action included a bit of an electric shock for the drag races as Sechelt's John Henderson brought along his revolutionary Tesla-Lotus car, powered entirely by batteries. This tiny orange sports car ran silently and amazed the crowd and competitors by defeating a series of hot-rodded V-8 rivals until "normal service was resumed" in the super street class.

Pender Harbour Secondary School's shop teacher raced a super-quick pick-up that had been engineered by some of his classes, with students Jordan McCauley and Jay Maxim both on hand at the races.

A famous dragster was on display and helped delight the crowd as McLennan had just acquired a dragster once campaigned by the legendary "Golden Greek" Chris Karamesines, the world's oldest top fuel racer. McLennan was cautiously testing the health of its wicked super-charged engine.

Sideshow activities, from a bouncy castle to frequent helicopter rides and Lions Club refreshments, kept the fans happy.

The next race on the calendar is in August as part of the Festival of the Rolling Arts in conjunction with the Coasters Car Club, Aug. 12 to 14.
