Coast martial arts instructor Shawn Phillips was recently in Florida for the first ever Gracie Jiu Jitsu immersion camp.

More than 300 attendees were there for four days of training with the legendary Gracie family. People came from as far away as Australia and England to take part in this special gathering to learn and grow in the art ofjiu jitsu.

Credited with founding the UFC and for the spread of jiu jitsu throughout the world, the Gracies have been teaching their art for more than 80 years.

"It was a great experience, not only to be there for the training, but to be invited as an instructor to help others learn, that was quite an honour for me," Phillips said. "Seeing how much this gentle art has changed peoples lives, including men, women and childrenfrom around the world was pretty cool."

Having just passed his next level on the road to jiu jitsu mastery, Phillips said heis proud to offer all the programs from the Gracies at Coast Martial Arts here on the Coast. For more information, check out www.coastmartialarts.com.

Dempster now 0-3

The lack of run support continued for Gibsons Ryan Dempster as the Chicago Cubs fell 1-0 to the Pittsburgh Pirates last Friday night.

Dempster (0-3) remains winless since last August. He surrendered one run and seven hits in seven-plus innings, striking out six and walking one while dropping his ERA to 2.14.

The Cubs have scored just 16 runs in Dempster's eight starts this season.

The loss was the 10th in a row for Chicago, which pushed to 12 after the Pirates won on Saturday and Sunday, sweeping the weekend series.

The Cubs broke out the bats though against San Diego Monday afternoon at Wrigley Field in Chicago, posting an 11-7 win to end their 12-game slide.
