The Sechelt Mariners bantam baseball team had an impressive showing recently, winning a silver medal at the Mission River Rush tournament on the May long weekend.
On hand were many proud parents and grandparents who witnessed their team play top-notch baseball.
The Mariners showed amazing skill in batting, pitching and fielding to the detriment of their opponents. The Mariners placed first in their pool with a 4-0 record.
Sechelt won their semifinal game 16-6 setting up the championship final against the host Mission Black Socks.
These two undefeated teams played awesome ball with many great plays offensively and defensively. In the end, the Black Socks found some holes in the outfield and took first place.
Mariners' coaches Bob Dixon, Stuart Flockhart and Mark McLean were proud of the team and of receiving the tournament's most sportsmanship team award.
During the skills competition, the foursome of Jake Downey, Elvis Lu, Griffin Troup and Jacob Bland came first in the 'around the horn' throwing competition. It was a great weekend of baseball and fun for the entire Mariners team. The Mariners currently play in a city interlock league with Vancouver, Burnaby, South Burnaby, Richmond and Gibsons and have a league record of 8-0.
