Dempster drops one to New York
Gibsons Ryan Dempster was in trouble all day and couldn't overcome a season high six walks as the New York Yankees edged the Chicago Cubs 4-3 last Saturday at Wrigley Field.
The loss dropped the right-hander to 5-6 on the season. Dempster pitched into the sixth, allowing three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts. He also registered a season high in pitches with 119.
"I think I made it harder on myself than I had to," Dempster said in a post game interview with Yahoo Sports. "We had a chance to win the game at the end there. As rough as it was, I made some pitches when I needed to make them and was able to get out of some jams."
Dempster is slated to start tonight (June 24) when the Cubs head to Kansas City for a series with the Royals.
Jays earn split
The Gibsons Jays split their two games last weekend, losing 16-6 to Chilliwack at home Saturday and coming back with a 6-2 road win in North Delta on Sunday.
The Jays hit the ball well, getting 10 hits on Saturday, but erratic pitching was their downfall as they gave up a total of 17 free passes to Chilliwack with walks and hit batters. Fielding errors and mental mistakes also contributed greatly to the loss. Coach Gary Pennington said in effect they gave the game away.
On Sunday in North Delta it was a very different story.
Gibsons got masterful pitching from both Brandon Elsdon and Dave Moran who each gave up just one run over nine innings. A highlight of both games was the aggressive base running by the Jays with many stolen bases as well as some fine bunting. Defensively, Gibsons made a number of fine plays by Stefan Reeves, Greg Kelley, Bird Brackett and Nick Pennington. James Pomfret, Moran, Tim Scarr and Nathan Petzold all had solid weekends at the plate.
Coaches Pennington and Brian Scarr emphasize that the team's success hinges in large part on the ability of their pitching staff to pitch with control and not give up base on balls to opposing teams. They have set out a new bullpen schedule to help pitchers achieve this goal.
The Jays next game is on Sunday in Cloverdale.
