Tennis competitors battled the sweltering heat at the 35th annual Sunshine Coast Open Tennis Tournament last weekend.
A total of 38 competitors entered the five main draws. There were new faces this year, with competitors coming from as far away as New Zealand, California and New York.
Tennis enthusiasts were treated to some first class tennis in the blazing sun. The biggest upset of the weekend occurred in the men's singles event, as the title was captured by newcomer Chad Brachat from Victoria over six-time defending champion Chris Wales 6-1, 6-4.
In the other main events, Shelley Lawrence won the women's singles title over defending champion Tammy Klashinsky. Otto Grunow from New York teamed with his nephew, Gustav Guzek, to capture the men's doubles trophy over locals Darcy Lawrence and Johnny Lam. The mixed doubles final was won by mother and son team Greta and Gustav Guzek over Shelley and Darcy Lawrence.
Shelley Lawrence and Marian Shoemaker won the women's doubles event over Katie Munroe and Karin Tiegges.
The consolation events also had some first-class, competitive play. John Nygren won the men's singles over Frank Lam. Russel Crum and Gordan Halloran won the men's doubles over John Bell and Blake Mithrush. Cathy Bond and Elaine Michel won the women's doubles over Caitlin Hicks and Alana Johnston and Katie Munroe and Denis Rogers won the mixed doubles over Gordon Halloran and Caitlin Hicks.
Thanks to the many sponsors who help support this growing, long standing community event. Also a special thanks to tournament organizers Shelley and Darcy Lawrence for a well run, fun event.
