Members of the North Shore’s Capilano Wrestling Club showed their strength at the recent Juvenile/Cadet National Wrestling Championships, in Guelph, Ont.

Alysha Monk from Elphinstone Secondary School, trailed with the Capilano Wrestling Club to prepare for the nationals.

Elphi head coach Clint Fox said she had a great experience, but her results were a bit disappointing.

“After winning her first match she lost her next two and was eliminated from the freestyle tournament,” said Fox. “She also wrestled in the Greco-Roman championships and unfortunately sprained her knee, so she came home on crutches. Alysha is one of the best kids I have coached in this sport.  If I could put together a ‘dream team’ from the past 25 years she would be an early selection. Her talent, dedication, work ethic, support for her teammates and sportsmanship have really made her stand out.

“While this year’s nationals mark the end of her high school wrestling career, I know she is looking at post-secondary options for next year and a university wrestling career is a possibility if she can find the right balance between education and sport. I’m really curious to see what she decides. I think the best may be yet to come.”
