Local players set for university playoffs

Michelle Jakszuk of Gibsons had a career-high 20 kills and 16 digs in one of her final regular season matches with the UBC Okanagan (UBCO) Heat women’s volleyball team to help the Heat finish the regular season with a record of 19 and 5.

The third-place Heat will face the sixth-place Bisons again in the Canada West playoffs starting on Feb. 23 in Kelowna.

Jakszuk, an outside hitter and Elphinstone grad, is one of three Heat players in their final year with the university. Over five regular seasons with the Heat Jakszuk played a total of 342 sets in 106 matches posting 584 kills, 503 digs, 200 blocks and 734.5 points.

First-year player Taylor Whittall of Roberts Creek and her teammates from the College of the Rockies (COTR), meanwhile, were scheduled to face the host University of Fraser Valley Cascades in the opening round of the PacWest championship tournament Feb. 22. The COTR Avalanche finished 7-17.

Whittall, who’s also an Elphinstone grad, played in 20 matches in her rookie year, 12 as a starter. Her regular season stats included 112 kills, 149 digs, 8 blocks and 131 points.
