Sechelt's Scott Legault is off to the championship final of the B.C. Major Midget League this weekend.

Legault, a goalie for the Vancouver North West Giants, will take on the Cariboo Cougars in a best-of-three series at the Burnaby Winter Club.

Last weekend's semifinal series against the Greater Vancouver Canadians was a thriller from start to finish. Legault played all three games (with the exception of the first 10 minutes of Sunday's game). The Giants won Friday's game in double overtime 3-2, lost Saturday's game 3-2 then picked up a big win in the third game 4-3.

Minor hockey

The first of two Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey Association spring break tournaments takes place this weekend in Gibsons and Sechelt.

The bantam division will see two teams from the Sunshine Coast along with three teams from Surrey and one team each from Mission, Langley and Ridge Meadows compete over three days. Action starts tonight (Friday) at 5:15 p.m. with the two Sunshine Coast teams squaring off at the Gibsons and Area Community Centre. Games continue Friday night and all day Saturday with the final set for 12:15 p.m. Sunday in Gibsons.

The second tournament is next weekend featuring Atom division teams with games all day March 25, 26 and the final at 1:45 p.m. on March 27 in Gibsons.

Baseball

Gibsons Mitch Rainer is off to a solid start with Hill College in the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference.

Hill College has a 2-2 record in conference play and is 12-6 overall after a 10-4 pre-season. Rainer has pitched in four games so far and has a record of 3-0 pitching 24 innings and a sparkling 1.85 ERA. Rainer is in his second season at the College and is actively trying to secure a full ride scholarship to a NCAA Division 1 school. The University of Texas is among the teams that have shown interest in signing him.

Hockeyville

The top 10 Kraft Hockeyville 2011 communities were revealed last week on CBC Television and the Sunshine Coast bid did not make it.

The Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey Association wants to send its thanks to the community for all their support.

"Thanks to Brenda Rowe for starting our bid and thanks to everyone for their support and their incredible hockey related story and photo submissions," said Jackie Coyle from the association. "We haven't been named Kraft Hockeyville (this year), but we certainly did show an incredible community spirit. I loved reading all of your stories. We most certainly are a fantastic hockey community."
