Only three weeks out of the gate, and already the Banana Peppers areposting points, as they tied Source 2-2 in women's league play last week.
Kelsey Nattell scored first for the Peppers, but then Source countered and scored twice. In the final 15 minutes, Pepper's Tayler Metcalfe hammered a short range volley at the Source net, to be denied by a tough-mined Source defender taking one for the team.
With two minutes left, Metcalfe had her second chance and didn't miss, giving the Peppers the tie.
Blazers continued to leave scorched earth behind them this week, with their 4-2 win over the Pigs. Goals from Blazers' veterans Jackie Ostrovsky, Astrid Bradbury and Nadine Slingerland setgood examples for newbie Dawne Clancy who also put one away. Deven Graham scored for the Pigs.
In the men's league, the main event was at Brothers Park, where Ridgepoint and IGFC played a tight gritty match. The usual names put the balls in the net, as Mike Husband exploded to the IGFC net for Ridgepoint, while for IGFC Ryan Paul hit a tight angled shot, and Junior Dixon bangedhome a signature 25-yarder.
Husband somehow managed to hit the inside of the post and have the ball ricochet out, while 'Big' Tony Johnstone stonewalled a point-blank strike on another Ridgepoint attempt.
Second-string keeper Josh Knox faced down the IGFC firepower the best he could, while injured keeper Calem Carmichael paced the sideline uncomfortably. Coach Mike Towers said of Carmichael: "Unless it's a Luke Skywalker Deathstar shot, it's not going in." The 2-1 victory puts the undefeatedIGFC on top of the chart.
With Pender Harbour Bananas' keeper Al Stewart off heroically helping out in Rwanda, the citizens of Pender-opolis were treated to the spectacle of backup keeper Rod Kammerle leaping around the goal mouth in a Superman shirt.
Unfortunately Halfmoon Bay's bullets whizzed passed the Banana of Steel, into the net, causing one uncharitable local to shout: "Hey Superman, that ball's not made of kryptonite!"
For Halfmoon Bay, 'Storm-in' Greg Stinson did his Todd Bertuzzi impersonation as he powered to the net, while Chris Croteau scored his first goal ever. Nate Wade also connected on a 20-yarder, and Jesse Morantz put in another pair this week. Pender's strikes came from John Gideon and Kammerle, who hung up his cape in the second half and scored.
