The Elphi Cougars put in a strong showing, finishing third last weekend at a tournament in North Vancouver.

Elphi started strong, winning their pool after Friday night's play and winning their first playoff game on Saturday.

"We were playing on Saturday without Kyla [Richey] as she was writing her SATs, but the team played awesome and everyone stepped their game up," said head coach Jan Richey.

Elphi lost in the semifinal to Hugh McRoberts of Richmond 2-1, and defeated Walnut Grove of Langley 2-0 to finish third.McRoberts defeated Riverside from Coquitlam 2-1 in the final.

In North Shore league play, Elphi is 5-1 with their only loss coming against Handsworth.

"The Handsworth game is one I wish we could replay as the girls did not play well," said Richey. "Generally though they have been playing with confidence and our team has become much better defensively and much more well-rounded with all our hitters doing a great job at the net hitting and blocking and our defence picking up any balls coming to them."

Elphi played two league games this week against St. Thomas Aquinas and Sutherland (both results were past press deadline) and then head to Point Grey Secondary School in Vancouver for a tournament this weekend.

In tournament play, Elphi has finished first, second, third and fifth.
