Kevin Kwon of Pitt Meadows led by one-stroke at the midway point of the B.C. Junior Boys championship at the Sunshine Coast Golf and Country Club.
The 17-year-old posted a tidy three-under-par 69 on Wednesday for a two-round 139 total (70-69). Thanks to his solid opening two rounds, Kwon sat at five-under for the championship, one ahead of his nearest competitor.
Sitting only one stroke back was first round leader Kevin Ko of Coquitlam. The 18-year-old followed up his opening round 68 with an even par 72.
Fellow Coquitlam resident Henry Lee, 13, holds solo third place after putting together his second consecutive round of 71 to sit at -2 overall, 142 total (71-71). Burnaby's Alan Tolusso, 16, rounds out the remaining players in the field, sitting under par for the championship.
Tolusso broke into the 60s during Wednesday's play, matching Kwon's three-under-par 69 putting him at -1 for the championship (74-69-143).
Rossland's Braden McKay, 14, recorded an ace on the par three, 178-yard 15th hole on Wednesday.
When asked about the moment, McKay was calm and collected.
"I didn't even see it go in. I hit a five-iron right at the pin and when I got up and saw it was in the hole I just grabbed it," he said. "I have never even made an eagle before."
The field was cut to the low 70 players and ties after the second round. The number at which the cut was made was 157, +13 overall.
None of the five golfers from the Sunshine Coast who made the opening 156-player field made the cut.
Andrew Strom of Gibsons finished at +18, Cailean Hourigan of Sechelt finished at +20, Trevor Smith of Roberts Creek finished at +29, Jacob Bland of Sechelt finished at +30 and Cam Mcallister of Gibsons finished at +32.
The third round was teeing off Thursday morning as Coast Reporter went to press. The final round is today (Friday).
Spectators are welcome at the course for the remaining two rounds.
