Sunday afternoon was a beautiful day for rugby as the Gibsons Pigs junior rugby squad took on Richmond RFC at Cougar Field.

The game started with loads of pace as both sides were playing their first games of the new season in the U16 Vancouver Rugby Union. The play went back and forth with some great ball movement, from forwards to backs, with everyone getting a piece of the action.

The junior Pigs have been training hard the past few weeks and were fortunate to have a couple of overseas players within the ranks.

Leondro Capozucco and Augustin Bonforte, both from Argentina, joined the gang for this game. Their presence seemed to give the locals a confidence boost, and it showed, with some super ball handling and great speed to give Shane Morrissey the first score.

The Pigs then went on a rampage and racked up six more tries, mixed between forwards and the backs. Scorers included Jesse Morrissey, Scott Ewen and Scott Gilks. And in his international debut, Augustin collected a hat trick.

The game ended with the junior Pigs on the top end of the scoreboard earning their first victory. Top marks to all the players. If you get a chance to come out and watch a home game on Feb. 27, March 13 or March 27, it will be worth your while.

See you on the sidelines!
