Two weeks after getting bounced in the semifinals of the junior men's baseball playoffs, the Gibsons Jays held their year-end awards celebration Aug. 19.

Several awards were handed out, as chosen by team members themselves.

Most sportsmanlike player went to Dave Moran, one of the team captains.

"Dave was a team leader who set a good example for all of us, who played a number of positions for us and always with a good spirit and attitude," said head coach Gary Pennington.

Two awards were handed out for most improved player including Mike "Bird" Brackett and Ameer Ismail.

"Bird had not played ball for a few years and yet fit in with the team very well. He had many good at-bats and made some outstanding catches in the outfield for us. He also was our most hustling player without a doubt," Pennington said.

"Ameer caught and played third base. At the end of the season, he was by far our best and most reliable pitcher, throwing some fine games."

There was another close vote for MVP, and again two awards were handed out - to Tim Scarr and Nick Pennington.

"Tim deserved this award because of his hitting, RBIs, fielding, team leadership and the work ethic he put in to the game, particularly in terms of fitness sessions. He came back from university baseball without any elitist attitude and was a positive role model for other players," added coach Pennington.

"Nick was our top base runner, bunter and run scorer and made plays in the outfield and infield that drew raves from opposing coaches. He also pitched in relief for us on occasion and was our most versatile player."

The final award was for most dependable player, given to James Pomfret.

"James was always there to help and provide leadership. He organized our new uniform acquisition, gave particular help with field care, offered to mentor players in younger leagues, played the game full-on, set a tremendous example for others, caught 12 innings behind the plate on the hottest day of summer and was the only player to receive votes in all four categories from his teammates," Pennington said.

Also acknowledged were other players who received nominations including Nate Petzold, Zach Ruggles, Brandon Elsdon, Taylor "Red" Fancher, Greg Kelley, Stefan Reeves and Mike Holme. Call-up players Jason Chung and Dominic Acciorelli were cited for their part in the season, and Ali Ismail was honoured for the outstanding work he did as manager and for his generosity in sponsoring team activities.
