The Elphi junior boys continued their winning ways as they beat Carson Graham 45-28 last Thursday (Jan. 19) to move to 6-1 in North Shore League play.
The Cougars squared off against West Vancouver who are also 6-1 at home last night (Thursday) past press deadlines.
Elphi, West Vancouver and St. Thomas Aquinas (STA) have identical records, while Sutherland is in first place with a 7-1 record. The Sabres edged the Cougars by 10 points in Gibsons in early December and would hold the tie-breaker should the two teams tie for first place following the final regular season games.
Elphi heads to Rockridge on Tuesday and plays the final home game of the season against Argyle on Thursday, Feb. 2, at 4:30 p.m. in Gibsons.
The Pender Harbour junior girls have been in tough the last three games against strong competition in West Vancouver, STA and Handsworth.
"We've been finding some of those schools are really strong and are provincially ranked really high," said coach Earl Antilla. "The girls haven't lost any enthusiasm and come to every game. So it has been fun for them, just not on the scoreboard. We play Rockridge on Monday, which is a school more our calibre."
The Elphi juvenile boys lost 53-16 to Handsworth last Wednesday (Jan. 18) to drop to 1-4 on the season. The Cougars travelled to Windsor on Jan. 25 (results were not available at Coast Reporter press time) and play on the road next week against West Vancouver and Collingwood.
The Elphi juvenile girls dropped a 45-19 decision at home to Sutherland last Tuesday (Jan. 17) and played at home against Windsor this week and Sentinel on the road. Results from those games were not available at press time.
The Cougars entertain Rockridge next Tuesday (Jan. 31), set for a 4:30 p.m. tip-off, then hit the road against STA on Feb. 2.
The Elphi senior boys' tough season continued last week with a pair of regular season losses and an exhibition setback.
The Cougars dropped a 63-42 decision to Bodwell on Jan. 11, a close 38-25 decision in exhibition play to Mulgrave on Jan. 18 and a 68-43 loss to Collingwood at home on Jan. 19.
In the loss to Collingwood, the Cougars trailed 14-11 after the first, and only 26-25 at half time, but a poor shooting third quarter doomed Elphi as Collingwood led 51-33 after three and cruised to the 25-point win.
Taylor Hanchar led Elphi in scoring with nine points while Luckner Bakewell had eight and Dalton LaFavour and Sam McLennan each scored six.
Elphi played Rockridge this week and heads to STA next week to close out the regular season.
In senior girls play, Chatelech dropped to 0-8 with a 63-13 loss to Windsor at home on Jan. 19, while the Cougars dropped a close 57-45 decision to Mulgrave on Jan. 18 to drop to 2-6 in league play. The Cougars finish up the regular season with games against Rockridge and STA, while Chat finishes North Shore regular season play with a game against Mulgrave.
