The Gibsons Jays junior men's team won their third game in a row 4-1 over the Ridge Meadows Royals at Larry Walker Field in Maple Ridge on Sunday, June 13.
Starter Stefan Reeves and closer Mitchell Rainer were dominant on the mound for Gibsons.
Reeves pitched five shutout innings and did not walk a batter. James Pomfret led the Jays at the plate, going three for three. Trevor Nicholson had two timely hits and turned a great double play as second base. Rainer, Adam Windsor and Nick Pennington also had base hits for the Jays.
Playing his first game for the Jays was Paul Higgins, recently new to the Coast from Ontario.
"The team is on a positive course and players are working hard at both fitness and game skills," said Jays' coach Gary Pennington. "Players are showing good responsibility and leadership and are conducting many of the training activities on their own."
Next home game is this Saturday (June 19) against the North Delta Diamondbacks. A game time was not available at press time as several games are booked for Ryan Dempster Field that day.
The Jays scheduled home game on Saturday against Newton was postponed because the Red Sox could not field a team. A make-up date has not been finalized.
In other team news, three of the Jays are attending a Seattle Mariners try-out camp in Everett, Wash. this week in the hopes of getting a good look from professional baseball scouts.
The Jays also got some good news late last week from Baseball B.C. as the team won their appeal of their disputed home game against the Ridge Meadows Mudhens, which took place on May 15.
The Mudhens refused to co-operate with Gibsons after the field was booked for several games that day and their game was going to be delayed, pushing Ridge Meadows return to the Lower Mainland. Gibsons was awarded the win and Ridge Meadows will face some disciplinary action from the league.
