The Gibsons Jays saw their record fall to 5-7 following a split in two games last weekend.

On Saturday, the Junior Jays played host to the Port Coquitlam Brewers playing a strong game in a 15-4 win.

Zack Ruggles was the winning pitcher, giving up just one walk in the four innings he pitched. Zack also struck out the side in the second inning.

In the fourth, Dave Moran came in and provided excellent relief pitching, tossing four shutout frames.

Moran showed great versatility in moving to the mound from behind the plate after the first few innings.

Nick Pennington led the Jays' hit parade going four for five, while newcomer Paul Higgins went three for four, as did Stefan Reeves. Trevor Nicholson had another good day in the field and on the bases, scoring four runs. A fine infield play was made by call-up player Thomas Scarr and Zack to squelch a potential rally by the Brewers.

On Sunday the Jays journeyed to the Fraser Valley to play the Cloverdale Rays. This time the Jays were victims of some bad luck. Prior to the game, Higgins, who had such a strong game on Saturday, broke his wrist diving for a ball in practice before the game. His loss to the team proved to be great. Playing with only eight men, the Jays did themselves proud holding the Rays to only 10 runs in the 10-4 loss. Many balls were hit to parts of the outfield by the Brewers that would normally have been caught for outs; instead they went for doubles and triples.

Nicholson went two for four and was on base three times. James Pomfret played an outstanding game behind the plate, beating out a drag bunt, and exhibited lots of great base running.

Russell Thorsteinsson hit a long double for Gibsons and pitched five strong innings in relief. Pennington made two diving catches at shortstop that showed great range and even caused the opposing coaches to comment on his fielding performance.

The Jays play the Vancouver Capilanos on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Ryan Dempster Field.
