Jays' bats silent in loss

The Gibsons Jays lack of offence proved to be their undoing in a 3-2 loss to the Vancouver Capilanos last Sunday at Ryan Dempster Field in Gibsons, dropping the junior men's team to 0-4.

The Gibsons Jays lack of offence proved to be their undoing in a 3-2 loss to the Vancouver Capilanos last Sunday at Ryan Dempster Field in Gibsons, dropping the junior men's team to 0-4.

Thomas Scarr and Mitchell Rainer split the nine innings of pitching, and combined gave up only nine hits, to go along with 14 strikeouts in the loss.

The Jays bats started very slowly, as they had all year, but in the bottom of the sixth inning, Nick Mercer and Danny Byers gave the team hope by roping back-to-back triples to the fence, and eventually scoring on an RBI by rookie player Ameer Ismail. Evan Murphy and James Pomfret split the game behind the plate and controlled the pace of the game, blocking numerous curveballs and each throwing out attempted steals.

The Jays are desperately looking to crawl out of the bottom of the standings when they travel to Surrey to play the Braves on Sunday.

The next chance to catch the Jays in home action is Sunday, June 24, when they take on the Maple Ridge Royals at Ryan Dempster Field with first pitch at 11 a.m.

Dempster breaks the streak

Winless in 18 starts dating back to Aug. 16, 2011, Gibsons Ryan Dempster put it all together and then some, tossing seven innings of three-hit ball as the Chicago Cubs pounded the Milwaukee Brewers 10-0 Tuesday night at Miller Park in Milwaukee.

Dempster improved his record to 1-3. He retired the first 15 batters he faced, not allowing a single base runner until Cody Ransom singled in the sixth inning.

Dempster had a 15-6 record against the Brewers going into the game.

"It felt nice," he said in a post game interview with Yahoo! Sports. "It's been a while, but it feels nice because we're sitting here, we're on a huge road losing streak and everything. It was nice to go out there and win a game like that, and see everybody. The guys played great on defence and hit the ball and they made all the plays and scored a bunch of runs."

In his other recent start on May 29, he lasted just 4 1-3 innings giving up six runs - all on homers in the Cubs 8-6 win over the San Diego Padres.
