Ice users set to meet with SCRD

The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) was scheduled to meet with ice-user groups on Thursday, Oct. 12, to collaborate on ice scheduling at the Gibsons arena and to update the users on the region’s water shortage.

Last week, local ice users expressed frustration at the delay in ice installation at the Sechelt arena. Kate Turner, registrar for the Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey Association and the Sunshine Coast Skating Club, said the delay affected the start of the skating season and postponed the power skating program.

Brenda Rowe, who organizes the men’s hockey league on the Sunshine Coast, was scheduled to speak at Thursday’s SCRD planning and development committee about the ice situation.

In an email to Coast Reporter this week, Lisa Clements said youth groups should have priority when it comes to ice time.

“We really need a solution; sitting back hoping for rain has not felt like a solution at all,” she said.

She added that it has been stressful for youth sports groups and said skaters have already backed out of one competition because of uncertainty of ice at the registration deadline.
