The Sunshine Coast Youth Soccer Association (SCYSA) House Leagues had their year-end tournament last weekend with approximately 1,200 young players competing at several fields on the Coast.
The youngest group, six to eight years old, had a ball (pun intended) at Brothers Park. To top off the day, Klaus Fuerniss from Tim Hortons showed up with an ample supply of Timbits and hot chocolate. Tim Hortons sponsors the young Timbits League, and Fuerniss presented the final awards.
The U13, U15 and U18 boys' and girls' leagues played two-day tournaments. I was involved with the U18 girls at Ted Dixon Park as coach of the Kermits and the U15 girls as coordinator of the girls' leagues.
The U15 league champs were the Kim Starnes squad followed by Garry Benner and his team in second. After the 10-game round robin tournament, both teams finished one-two again.
The U18 girls saw the Kermits and the Dangeroos, coached by Richard Getzkow, finish their round robin in that order.Sue Jensen of Jensen Marketing presented trophies and medals, which she annually sponsors, to the Pender Harbour Posse and the Supremes for their U18 league first and second place final positions and to Starnes' and Benner's teams for their U15 league first and second place final positions.
Now all first and second place teams, from their round robin competitions, move on to their respective finals. Shirley Macey Park is the venue on Saturday.
The U13 girls' teams G and D kick off the day at 9 a.m. with the U13 boys' teams C and F next at 10.U15 girls' teams D and E go at 11. The U15 boys' teams E and F go at noon. The girls' U18 teams B and C play at 1:30 p.m. and U18 boys' teams C and F play the last game at 3:30 p.m.
Rep soccerThe U15 Scorpions gave a demonstration of fast, highly skilled ball movement to the Victoria Rep team as our girls travelled to the provincial capital last Sunday.
Centreback Kelsey Belle-rive and sweeper Rachel Hargreaves smothered Vic-toria's high scoring centre forward. Goalkeeper Gur-veen Clair made a couple of important late saves.
Kendra Pomfret sent Tayler Metcalfe away and Tayler put it home. Sarah Rayner made a run down the left wing and fired a shot that the Victoria goalie couldn't hold. Alisha Quilty did what all attackers should do: she followed the shot to the goal and calmly buried the rebound for a 2-0 win.
Scorpions are now off to the Provincial Cup playdowns as the district's representative.Scorpions will be in Coquitlam on Sunday to play the Richmond Rage for the Coastal Cup. These teams are always in close games, but Scorpions can prevail if they keep up the pace they showed in their last few outings.
The U13 Stingrays had a great game with the Burnaby Hot Shots last weekend. Selina Byer and Sydney McAlister on a penalty kick gave the locals a 2-1 halftime lead.
Hot Shots notched their second with seven minutes remaining so the game went into two overtime periods. Neither team could find the net so it was on to the shootout. Stingrays' Maya Schutz stopped one penalty shot, as did the Burnaby keeper. Experience prevailed though, as Burnaby won the shootout 3-2.
