The Sunshine Coast Youth Soccer Association (SCYSA) completed its year-end tournaments for the house divisions this past weekend.
"The players always enjoy this event as it brings the teams together as they share their enjoyment of the game with each other in a competitive yet fun environment," said SCYSA executive director Norm Blair. "As one coach put it, 'the closely contested games at the tournament reflected league-play throughout the season.'"
This comment is the culmination of the work conducted throughout the season by the many people involved in making sure that the players receive more than an exercise, they receive an education. The game of soccer is about fair play, passing the ball and working together. These are life skills that are hopefully transferred into their daily lives."
The year-end results included: U13 girls - Team Silver first in house and Team Teal second in house; U13 boys - Team Teal first in house, Team White second in house; U15 girls - Team Grey first in house, Team Light Blue second in house, Team Synergy first in tournament and Team Green Trolls second in tournament; U15 boys - Team Grey first in house, Team Copper second in house; U18 girls - Team Purple first in house, Team Red second in house, Team Red first in tournament and Team Blue second in tournament; U18 boys - Team Red first in house, Team Royal Blue second in house.
Full results for the playoffs were not submitted to Coast Reporter before press deadline Thursday.
According to Blair, this past season the SCYSA experienced challenges in forming teams. The demographics of this age group continues to decline, yet more than 90 teams were formed with an average of 35 games being played every weekend up and down the Coast. Referee, player and coach development session were also offered.
"The SCYSA appreciates the support from the province as well as local enterprises to assist in keeping the membership fees at such a level to provide the ability for all young people to play the game," Blair added.
This past year the SCYSA brought another Whitecaps training session to the Coast that kicked off the season. Preparing for next season, new changes in development programs by the British Columbia Soccer Association (BCSA) will require all coaches to update their credentials. The WhitecapsFC and BCSA are collaborating in the development of programs, with the most recent being the announcement of a new league, EA Sports.
And speaking of development programs, the U13 boys Scorpions took first place in the gold division. Good luck to them in the playoffs.
