Golfers from Chatelech and Elphinstone began their quest for a provincial title this week.

The high school golf season started last Friday at the Sunshine Coast Golf and Country Club as Chat and Elphi squared off in their first match of the season.

Chat welcomes back almost its full squad this year that went to the provincial last season. They beat Elphi 7-0. Cameron Dybwad was the low golfer for Chat with a score of 76.

Chat played West Van-couver Wednesday at Northlands Golf and Country Club. Results were not available at press time.

Elphi didn't have long to shake off their early loss, as they were back on the course Monday. This time the opponent was Howe Sound from Squamish. The result wasn't in Elphi's favour as they lost six and a half points to a half point.

"The matches were close. Things just didn't go in our favour," said Elphi coach Jim Pringle.

Much like Chat coach Dean Totten, Pringle has several returning golfers on this year's squad.

"We have a good group of returning players who will make up the competitive portion of the squad," said Pringle. "We also have a number of kids in the eighth and ninth grades that will fill out the team. We'll have a competitive team for many years to come."

Pringle said Elphi's goal is to play well and make the playoffs.

Chat's team is large this year with 16 kids on the squad including four female players.

"It's awesome to have girls on the team," said Totten. "Both Jim and I are trying to get more girls into golf. The high school team is a good outlet for that."

Totten said Chat's goal is a provincials berth again and trying to best last year's showing.

"It's very similar to last year," said Totten. "We have lots of talent and experience. I think we can match up well with any of the teams on the North Shore. I think the biggest competition with be amongst themselves. You have golfers every week fighting it out for five spots for our matches. In practice, everyone has to work hard and win their matches or else they don't get a chance to compete in the league. It's motivation for everyone to compete at a high level."

On Monday, Elphi plays Collingwood in Squamish while Chat entertains Sey-cove in Roberts Creek.
