Harlem Crowns set for return

BASKETBALL
Harlem Crowns
The Harlem Crowns, who last entertained a packed house at Elphinstone Secondary School in 2012, return to Gibsons this Wednesday, Oct. 29 for a charity exhibition match against the Elphi Cougars.

The world famous Harlem Crowns bring their high-energy antics to the Sunshine Coast next Wednesday in what is sure to be a crowd-pleasing affair in support of the Elphinstone Secondary School legacy program.

The Crowns last played Elphi two years ago and return on another tour of western Canada.

Charles Smith, a former member of the Harlem Globetrotters, organized the Crowns in the late ‘50s. The team tours across North America, Europe and Asia and will play up to 150 games this year.

The Crowns bring something new every night. They play Clownball, which manager Herb Scaife, says adds a new element every time they take to the floor.

The Crowns go through set gags and regular comic routines, but every game is different as the Crowns are masters of the ad-lib.

The Crowns are made up of veteran players, the one-year men, and of course, the rookies. In order to play for the Crowns, a player must have outstanding basketball ability and then a flair for comedy and showmanship.

The fundraising game is in support of a legacy project — a wall of fame that is in the early stages at Elphi. The wall of fame will help highlight student athletes who have gone on to achieve success after high school.

The fun-filled exhibition game is set for Wednesday night, Oct. 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Elphi gym. Tickets are $9 in advance, $10 at the door available at the IGA in both Gibsons and Wilson Creek.
