The legendary Harlem Crowns will return to Gibsons on Monday, Oct. 30 to play the Elphinstone Senior Boys basketball team, headed by Coach Mike Sopow.
The game is highly anticipated, said Elphinstone leadership teacher Sarah Mani. “These guys have come and played our senior team many times – they were coming every two years,” Mani said.
“It’s been three years since they were here last and this year’s Elphi team is pumped to play the travelling team. They were in grades 8 and 9 last time the Crowns played in our gym.”
Organized by former Harlem Globetrotter Charles Smith in the late 1950s, the Harlem Crowns are billed as “masters of the ad lib,” promising “something new every night” as they go through set gags and comic routines.
“We call it clownball,” manager Herb Scaife says on the Crowns’ webpage.
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and show will begin at 6 p.m.
Tickets are $9 advance and $10 at the door. They can be purchased at the Elphi front office during school hours, and at IGA Wilson Creek and IGA Gibsons customer service counters.
Mani’s leadership class will have a concession available and funds raised will go to a worthy cause.
