For everyone on hand last Saturday night, it was the perfect place to be for great entertainment the night before Halloween.
The Harlem Crowns basketball team arrived in Gibsons at Elphinstone Secondary School with some old tricks and some new treats up their sleeves. Not only was it an excellent display of basketball, by both the Crowns and Elphi senior boys, but it was a laugh a minute.
"We've hosted these guys many times in the past, but this was the most energetic crowd, and the Crowns just fed off of it," said Sarah Mani, teacher in charge of the event. "Somehow they really make everyone feel involved, and it's just a great time."
Herb Scaif Sr. has been on this circuit for 28 years, but he has not lost his touch. His son, Herb Scaif Jr., and the other players really support him in his performance.
The celebrity referees, Bob Hoy of Gibsons Marketplace IGA and Denis Turenne, coach of the bantam boys and a local ref, were excellent sports and helped the show every step of the way.
The game brought in more than $900, between ticket sales and a concession run by the Elphi leadership class, with all proceeds going towards Elphi athletics. Thanks to all who came out. It was a super success, and we look forward to seeing them again in a couple more years.
