Roberts Creek's Will Gye helped the University of Victory Vikes to a Canada West soccer championship last Saturday.
Gye scored once in the 4-1 win over the Trinity Western Spartans in the championship game. Gye found his way onto the score sheet in the 75th minute, converting on a penalty kick after James Rhodes was hauled down in the box.
Saturday's victory was icing on the cake for a Vikes squad that has knocked off all challengers in the Canada West this season, and will now take their 12-3-1 record and Canada West title to the national stage. The win gave the Vikes their 11th Canada West title and their first since winning the Canadian University Sports (CIS) nationals in 2005. The victory marked the fifth conference title for head coach Bruce Wilson.
"I am really proud of what the boys accomplished. There are never any easy games in the Canada West," Wilson said in a news release. "This isn't our end goal - we will get some rest and head to Ottawa with just one thing in mind." Both UVic and Trinity Western will now prepare for the CIS National Championships, being held at Carleton University in Ottawa. The tournament, which got underway Thursday, features the top eight teams in the country in a single-elimination tournament to decide Canadian university soccer supremacy. Joining the Vikes and Spartans in Ottawa are the host Carleton Ravens, the Laurier Golden Hawks, York Lions, Laval Rouge et Or, Montreal Carabins and the University of New Brunswick.
