Gibsons' Josh Gray helped lead the Osoyoos Coyotes to a bronze medal at the 2011 Cyclone Taylor Cup last weekend in Fernie.
The Coyotes shut out the Richmond Sockeyes 3-0, thanks to a two-goal effort from Gray. He finished the four-team tournament with four goals and one assist. The Peninsula Panthers won the cup after edging the Fernie Ghostriders 5-3 in the final.
Last summer, after being one of only five midget rep Sunshine Coast Blues players to be asked to sign with the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) team, Gray lived through an incredible season. The Coyotes finished first overall with 90 out of 100 points and 42 wins. He finished the regular season 10th in team scoring, even after missing 18 games with a shoulder injury.
In the playoffs, Osoyoos swept the Penticton Lakers, where Gray played against former Blues' teammate Kyle Horsman, managed a four-game sweep of the Kelowna Chiefs and won a pair of six-game series against the Revelstoke Grizzlies and Castlegar Rebels to represent the KIJHL in the Cyclone Taylor Cup.
WHL
Madeira Park's Joe Antilla and the Kootenay Ice are onto the second round of the Western Hockey League (WHL) playoffs after dispatching the Moose Jaw Warriors in six games.
The Ice won 3-1 at home last Friday with Antilla scoring the third goal, and then wrapped up the series with a 5-4 win in Moose Jaw Sunday night. Up next for the Ice are the top seeds in the Eastern Conference, the Saskatoon Blades.
Major midget
In major midget league action, nothing appears to be stopping the Vancouver Northwest Giants, as they won the Pacific Regional title last weekend in a two-game sweep of the Red Deer Optimist Rebels.
Sechelt's Scott Legault was in net for the Friday 7-2 win, while he had the night off in the Giants 3-1 win Saturday night.
This is the first time in the seven-year history of the B.C. Major Midget League that B.C. has won the Pacific regionals.
The Giants will be flying to St John's, Nfld. on April 16 for the Telus Cup national midget championship.
