A week after capturing the North Shore championship, the Elphinstone Grade 9 girls added to their titles, finishing off their undefeated season and winning the Vancouver and District Juvenile Championship.

The Cougars won all their regular season games with a 14-0 record, won the Chatelech Grade 10 tournament and beat Windsor in three sets to win the Vancouver title.

The tournament play (held at Mos-crop Secondary School on Thursday, Nov. 17) saw some tense moments as the rallies often continued four or five times back and forth, over the net, according to coach David Barnum.

"There were outstanding defensive digs, hard spikes and double blocks executed by many of the teams representing their zones, but it was our consistent team play and communication that kept the players at the top of their game," Barnum said.

"Many of the players picked up the sport in elementary school. The Roberts Creek program, under the enthusiastic direction of Barry Krangle, has continued to develop athletes who enjoy the sport so much, they move on to the club system. The players who first began playing in their high school years showed incredible improvement this fall both in their individual skills and system play."

After winning the North Shore league title, also last week, the senior Cougars have a little more work to do to secure a berth in the provincials.

Elphi won a wild card playoff last week in two sets over Windsor, to set them up to play host to the final wild card tournament this Saturday in Gibsons.

The Cougars will play DP Todd from Prince George at 11 a.m. then take on Ladysmith Secondary at 1 p.m. DP Todd and Ladysmith will battle at 2 p.m. The team with the best record after the three games will secure the final berth for the zone in the provincials.
