Sunshine Coast dart players did their home towns proud at the 30th annual 55 Plus BC Games, hosted by the City of Vernon and area with 11 zones participating from across the province.
The dart competition was held at the curling rink in Armstrong. Zone 4 (Lower Mainland including the Sunshine Coast) had 12 participants with eight in the Junior Seniors (age 55 to 64) and four of the team members were from the Sunshine Coast (Petra Petersen of Gibsons, Bob Mahar of Sechelt, Irma Mahar of Sechelt and Steve Baker of Roberts Creek). The Seniors (65 plus) had four representing Zone 4 (two from Vancouver, one from Burnaby and one from New Westminster).
The events started on Sept. 13 with men’s singles and women’s doubles. Zone 4 did well with Dana Rowe (Richmond) winning a silver medal in men’s singles and Bert Davis (Zone 1 – Vancouver Island South) winning gold. Petra Petersen and Claudia Ferris (Vancouver) won bronze medals in the women’s doubles competition with Zone 8 (South Central BC) winning gold.
Sept. 14 was an exciting day for Zone 4 with many of the Zone 4 players moving forward to the elimination round. The women’s singles were exciting with all four Zone 4 players moving into the elimination round with Petra Petersen winning the gold medal.
Sept. 15 was mixed doubles with some more excitement for Zone 4. Irma Mahar moved forward with her doubles partner, Dana Rowe, to place fourth and Kim Eaton (Vancouver) and Marietta Botwright (North Vancouver) moved ahead, winning the gold medal for junior doubles.
Sept. 16 saw even more excitement with the Team Games. With two junior teams from Zone 4, only one moved forward in the competition to see the very last game of the event resulting in gold for the team with Irma Mahar, Kim Eaton, Marietta Botwright and Dana Rowe.
The week was a great opportunity for many of our Coast Dart players to share the excitement of the dart competition and enjoy the support of teammates from across the Lower Mainland. The winning team showed how well a team can perform when the pressure is on. For both Petra Petersen and Irma Mahar playing their first senior competition, they did an outstanding job representing Zone 4 and, in particular, the Sunshine Coast.
Congratulations to all the medal winners. All the game results can be found at
