Goals, lots of them, highlighted week two action in men's league soccer last Sunday, Sept. 20.
Sechelt Chiefs' strikers bombarded Gibsons Pigs United netminder, in a 10-2 win.
Scotty Johnson scored four, Matt Joe and Rick Timothy each scored a pair with singles from Curtis Craigan and Steve Peele.
At Hackett Park, Coast Progressive United (CPU) beat Gibsons Bruins 7-1, in a tough week for the Gibsons squads. Bruins were sporting their new black and yellow jerseys, which caused Bruin back-liner Jessie Agnew to complain; 'its hard to roar like a bear when you're dressed up like a bumblebee.' Despite the lopsided score, Brady Lynn was Luongo-esque as he kept his team looking respectable and kept the score from also going into double digits. Most CPU goals were rebounds after initial saves, and John Law, who scored twice, had precision strikes kicked and swatted away. Eoin Walker stormed in on his breakaway, to see Lynn stack the pads, and watch his shot deflect wide. Bruins' single goal came from Ken Fujimori who barged his way through the goal mouth to force the ball over the line.
Halfmoon Bay Sea Kayaks edged Pender Harbour Bananas out of first place, with their 6-2 win.
Ryan Daley for three, with singles from Rainer Weininger and Dylan Eyers. Halfmoon Bay's sixth goal was an erratic, goal-mouth ricochet, which Mike Cowie claimed as his own. Halfmoon Bay saw the return of a recuperating Jeff Wadge ignore his doctors orders toplay some great defence. As well, Halfmoon Bay got a great 90 minutes from their own Gordie Howe in Dave Marsh, who entered his sixth decade, and had teammates referring to him as 'Mr. Sockey'.
Rich Massullo scored one of the goals for the Bananas.
In the women's league, Blazers and The Source were headed for a scoreless draw, when Jenna Crozier put her ball in the net and her team into second place.
Gibsons Pigs seem to be a striker away from excellence, as they continue to put in good defensive performances, this week losing a close match 2-1 with Xenichen Ya Yas.
Trina Geisbrecht's perfectly placed chip over Fusions' keeper gave Mayhem their first goal in their win over Fusion.
