A generous donor has given her sailboat to the Gibsons Yacht Club.

“It’s an exceptional and timely gift for our growing Club Boat program,” says club president Hugh Willson.

“This program allows Club Boat members to use a fine sailboat without having to buy or maintain it,” he adds.

“It’s a bargain for interested or would-be sailors.”

Membership in the yacht club is open to the public for a very reasonable fee. For an additional $500 a year, a member can use one of the two club sailboats. See the GYC website at gibsonsyachtclub.com for details.

“Our club boats have proved so popular that we anticipate a wait list,” says club spokesman Gord Cudlipp.

The club is holding its annual membership chili fest on Saturday, Jan. 27 at Harmony Hall in Gibsons. Doors open at 6 p.m. Newcomers and guests are welcome. If you’d like to attend, please email [email protected]

The new club boat, named Pavlova, is 26 feet long. “It’s very well built,” says Cudlipp, who used to run the club’s Learn To Sail program.

“We’ve been updating equipment and preparing the boat for this year’s sailing season. It’s a good addition to our club.”

Last year the club purchased a 28-foot Grampian sailboat for members’ use.

“There are a lot of former boat owners who don’t want the trouble of owning and maintaining a boat, but want to continue sailing. It’s also an opportunity for people who don’t have enough money to buy a boat to enjoy sailing.”

For further information, come to the membership chili fest, or contact Gord Cudlipp.
