The Gibsons junior men's baseball team dropped their inaugural league game last Sunday 4-3 to the Brewers in Port Coquitlam.
Leading for much of the game by two runs, too many walks and a couple of key errors late in the game proved to be too much for Gibsons to overcome, this despite outhitting the Brewers 11-9.
Brandon Elsdon started for Gibsons and pitched a good game. He made several outstanding fielding plays on the mound to save base hits up the middle.
Catcher James Pomfret was solid behind the plate, blocking many pitches in the dirt and throwing out two runners trying to steal.
Adam Windsor hit a long double and another line drive base hit.
Greg Kelly, a midget call-up player, also hit a long two-base hit as well as a single.
Trevor Nicholson got the third double for Gibsons, while Nick Pennington was the leading hitter for Gibsons, going four for four plus a walk and two stolen bases.
Zach Ruggles, another midget call-up, got two base hits for Gibsons and pitched well in the following rain-shortened exhibition game with the Brewers.
The team showed that they can compete in this highly competitive league," said Gibsons coach Gary Pennington. "They performed particularly well, given the fact that many on the team had not had a chance to practise together because of being away at college or university. They demonstrated a good work ethic and were professional in the way they prepared and conducted themselves both on and off the field."
Next game for Gibsons is in Newton on Sunday against the Red Sox.
