The Gibsons midget AA Cubs repeated as tournament champs following a perfect 5-0 record at the 23rd annual Ross Tournament in Newton over the May long weekend.

Under head coach Drew Murphy's leadership, Gibsons outscored their opponents by an impressive margin of 56-12.

The Cubs opened with a 14-0 win over the Newton Red Sox in a game highlighted by MVP Greg Kelley's three-run homer.

In game two, clutch hits by MVP Taylor Hanchar paced the way in Gibsons 14-2 win over the Ladner Red Sox.

Game three was a little closer, but Gibsons came out on top 10-2 over Quesnel paced by MVP team captain Thomas Scarr.

In the semifinal, the Cubs went up against a familiar opponent - the Sechelt Athletics. There were many highlight plays from both Coast teams, but Ameer Ismail's game saving catch deep in left field was simply spectacular. In the bottom of the seventh with the game tied 5-5, Brendan Barnum laid down a bunt to advance Taylor into scoring position. Dave Diether came to the plate and belted a screaming shot to the fence, bringing in the winning run.

Ladner was up next in the final, which the Cubs won 8-3.

Strong hitting by the Cubs, coupled with amazing defensive plays led by game MVP Jason Chung in centre field and James Duff at shortstop, brought Gibsons the championship.

The Cubs are having an incredible season with a record of 22-0 and are in first place in the 21-team Lower Mainland League.

Gibsons plays host to North Delta on Sunday, June 6 with games at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Ryan Dempster Field of Dreams.
