One of North America's most scenic and challenging marathons has added a third race to its roster.
The third annual Run the Rock (RTR) on Texada Island Aug. 25 offers full and half marathons, and organizers have added an eight-km event on an easier course for 2013.
Runners have until Aug. 13 to register for the marathon and half marathon races at theregular price of $40. Between Aug. 13 and 22, when registration closes, thelate registrationrate is $60. Both rates include a technical shirt and stone finishers medal.
The eight-km event costs $15 and includes a finishers certificate. To register, seewww.avidfitness.ca/rock/ or call Rob McWilliam, 1-604-486-0377.
More than 30 runners have registered so far, from as far away as Germany and Brazil. B.C. athletes from Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and the Lower Mainland have signed up, including Angela Plamadon of Comox, who set the record for the women's half marathon at RTR in 2011, and Wayne Crowe, also of Comox, who won the men's half marathon in 2012 in record time. Also returning is Janet Green, 59, of Courtenay, who has completed 287 marathons.
"Texada Island is arural paradise," McWilliam said. "Our course is hilly in the first half, enough to be worth serious bragging rights when you complete it. RTR offers a high-quality event in a unique location, and we invite more people to be part of the action."
