Nevan Flay, formerly of West Sechelt, is playing for the Port Moody Panthers this season. He’s living in Richmond.

Sechelt’s Nevan Flay has been traded from the Delta Ice Hawks to the Port Moody Panthers Junior B hockey club.

“When I found out he might be available to move, he was a player that myself and the other coaches wanted to acquire,” said Peter Zerbinos, general manager for the Port Moody Panthers.

“He brings a certain element to the game, a lot of heart, and his desire to compete at this level is very, very high,” Zerbinos said. “Nevan is a very versatile player. He plays forward or [defence]. He competes hard on the ice, is a hard-hitting player who finishes his checks. He has offensive prowess as well,” Zerbinos said.

Flay was thrilled about the trade.

“I’m going to get a lot more experience and better experience with this team. I think I’ll play more,” he said. “This is my first year playing forward but I like that a lot. It gives you a different aspect of the game.”

Flay grew up in West Sechelt and played minor hockey locally for years. This is Flay’s second year playing for the Pacific Junior Hockey League. During the first season he lived on the Lower Mainland and moved back to West Sechelt after spring break so he could finish off his high school, graduating Grade 12 with friends at Chatelech Secondary School.

Currently he is living with a family friend in Richmond, where he also works at Cyclone Taylor Sports, a hockey retail outlet at the Richmond 6 Rinks. He practises with the Panthers three times a week and plays games twice a week, in communities throughout the Lower Mainland. He also trains at a gym three times a week.

Flay said next year he would like to advance to a Junior A team and he’s also hoping to pursue a career in the trades.
