Exciting finishes and a few unlikely winners highlighted a great weekend of softball in Sechelt last weekend.

Sechelt Minor Softball held its year-end tournament, which concluded Sunday at Hackett Park.

The tournament started Thursday, and this year's final event was filled with excitement.

In the Mite Division, Paul's Paintin' Place, a team that had struggled to win during the regular season, saved their best for last as they won the year-end tournament, while the Re/Max Oceanview Peewee team also had a great weekend finishing third at the tournament after a sub-par regular season.

"It was a successful season and an even better year-end tournament," said league president Tim Hayward. "A lot of teams provided upsets throughout the weekend. It was great to see some of the kids who had tough regular seasons get a taste of success."

Sechelt Minor Softball had 300 kids from ages five to 18 this year.

"We're the only league that we're aware of in this province that is mixed fast pitch," Hayward said. "I think that's one of the reasons why we are successful. We have a mix of competitive ball for both boys and girls, and there is also a social program for youth. It's great to see everyone interacting and having a good time."
