Once again Roberts Creek's Shaun Stephens-Whale has been selected to be a part of the 2011 Empire State Building Run-Up set for Feb. 1 in New York.
This year's run attracted a record number of applications from all over the world and Stephens-Whale was selected to compete with some of the most diverse and well-trained athletes in the field.
Stephens-Whale is currently training hard at the University of British Columbia using stair climbers, elliptical machine, stationary bike, some pool running and long trail runs. He works out daily in the weight room and twice a week runs up the Landmark Hotel in Vancouver.
Coming off a good cross country season with UBC with many personal best times, he is expected to finish among the top competitors in New York. This will be the third time he has taken part in the event.
Ski/snowboard team
The Chatelech ski and snowboard race team brought back more podium finishes last week as the team continues to do well in competition.
Grade 10 Jaques Martiquet placed third in boys skiing while Grade 10 Jarrett Porter placed third in boys snowboarding.
Chat is off to Whistler for another race this weekend.
Volleyball
The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack dropped their first men's league match in four sets to the Brandon Bobcats on Jan. 14.
Roberts Creek's Stuart Richey made his debut in the libero position, registering eight digs and stable passing.
Both teams are now 3-6 on the year.
Stuart's sister Kyla returned to action with the UBC Thunderbirds after her national team commitments and helped lead UBC to a weekend split in Calgary.
On Friday night, UBC picked up a 3-2 win over the Dinos. Richey had 17 kills. On Saturday night, Calgary returned the favour, winning 3-2. Richey had 15 kills. UBC is 9-3 on the season.
