The Elphi Cougars won their appeal last Saturday with B.C. School Sports, allowing the transfer of Chatelech player Jennifer Brown.
B.C. School Sports granted the transfer request, meaning Jennifer will play with the senior girls volleyball team at Elphi, then return to Chat next semester (in January) to continue her athletics and studies. She'll also be able to graduate with her classmates at Chat next year, her Grade 12 year, according to Elphi coach Jan Richey."It is quite amazing [B.C. School Sports] did that, as the word was that Jen wanting to return to Chat was going to cloud the issue," said Richey.
"I think they felt Jen was doing this with the very best of intentions and that it was not done to be more competitive or make a better team, but simply to have a season to honour Hanna [Anderson] and Trina [Borley]. Now we can go forward and play with the heart and determination those girls demonstrated every time they stepped on the court or field.
"A big part of the appeal being granted was the support the coaches from the North Shore in particular and from other coaches around the province expressed to us, and I can't thank them enough for their letters and encouragement in the pursuit of this appeal."
On the court, Elphi finished fifth at a tournament last weekend at UBC.
Elphi won their pool on Friday night with wins against Stelly's and Rick Hansen and won their first playoff game Friday night.
After attending the appeals committee on Saturday morning, Elphi beat South Kamloops, but dropped a tough match to Walnut Grove to finish fifth.
"We should have been in the final four, but the girls had had a tough morning and the results are pretty good considering," said Richey.
Elphi won their first North Shore league match Tuesday against Argyle and are at Chat this weekend for a tournament.
Elphi hosts Carson Graham and Windsor next Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in a pair of league games.
