Coast high schools finished second and third at the North Shore golf finals on Wednesday, May 7, at the Northlands Golf Club in North Vancouver.
Elphinstone finished in second place with Chatelech third, Mulgrave in fourth and Collingwood as the clear winner claiming the North Shore title.
Heading into championship day, both Elphi and Chatelech finished in a tie with Collingwood in league play with identical 4-1 records.
Chatelech completed its league schedule with a 4-3 win over Collingwood at the Sechelt Golf Club on May 5, while Elphi completed its league schedule with a 6-1 win over Mulgrave on April 30.
Elphi coach Bill Clarke said the team is excited to advance to the zones, which took place Thursday, May 15, in Vancouver.
“We’ve had some really good scores this year. We struggled a bit with the mountain course last week, but our results still allowed us to get through and finish second,” Clarke said. “I like our chances at the zones, but it’s all about can a young player put it all together on the same day? You need four out of five good scores and then you can move on. It’s a total team effort.”
Chatelech coach Quinn Campbell and his team missed one of their top golfers, which put the team behind the eight ball before they even took to the course.
“Northlands is a long and challenging layout that demands precision on virtually every shot. Miss a fairway, and you likely have no chance to get on the green in regulation,” Campbell said. “Miss the green on the wrong side, and you might be lucky to escape with bogey. It is very much a risk/reward kind of course.”
Campbell was disappointed with the way the season ended, considering the regular season was quite strong.
“Had our entire team been at the match, we could certainly have challenged Elphi for second place,” he said.
