The junior girls volleyball team capped off their impressive season with a three-set sweep of St. Thomas Aquinas to capture the North Shore championship in North Vancouver on Monday night, Nov. 8.

Elphi started strong and never let up with a strong serving game throughout the contest.

"The hits were amazing and STA never knew what was coming next," said Elphi head coach Jane Ostashek. Every player contributed. The serving was powerful and difficult for the strong STA team to receive. We certainly played our best volleyball this season."

Ostashek said the fans who made their way to North Vancouver were loud and proud - a definite advantage for the Cougars.

"Our Cougar mascot cheered the team on from the sidelines and even had a little fun with the STA mascot," she said. "The Elphi students brought bright, yellow signs to hang up all over the playing court that encouraged each player on the team. Parents, grandparents, students all rallied from beginning to end with loud cheering and clapping.

"The team responded and never, ever let up their momentum."

The Cougars qualified for the North Shore final after winning their semifinal match against Collingwood on Nov. 4.

This is the first time that Elphinstone's name has appeared on the junior girls championship trophy since 1962.

The Cougars are still playing, as with the win they advanced to the Lower Mainland Championships that were being played this week.
