More and more kids seem to be playing basketball in the elementary schools, which is paying dividends when they reach high school, as all three of our local high schools have benefited and had fairly successful seasons recently.

In the A flight side, West Sechelt gave the undefeated Cedar Grove girls a scare, losing 9-6 in the semifinal, while Roberts Creek was able to waltz past Halfmoon Bay. The final went back and forth with Cedar Grove coming out on top 14-11.

In B flight, Madeira Park defeated Kinnikinnick 11-6 in their final, while the C flight champs were Gibsons team one as they overwhelmed their Langdale neighbours in the final game.

In the boys' tournament, Cedar Grove was clearly the class of the field, beating West Sechelt in the semifinal and defeating Kinnikinnick to win the championship.

In the B flight, West Sechelt and Madeira Park battled it out in the final. Madeira is proving to be a super little b-ball breeding ground, as those athletes squeaked out a 13-9 win.

The C final held at Gibsons Elementary School, and refereed and officiated by talented TJ Turenne and his grade 9 teammates, did a wonderful job of overseeing this Grade 5 event. Roberts Creek team number three defeated West Sechelt team number 3 to take home the hardware once again.

With the quality of basketball skills improving at the elementary level, parents might think seriously this summer of enrolling their Grade 5 to 7 son or daughter in the local Sunshine Coast basketball camp, held in late July. There is also an older camp for Grade 8 to 12 girls and boys the following week. The camps employ some highly qualified coaches, and the improvement in skill level of the campers is amazing.
