The 2015 School District No. 46 elementary school play days were a big success last week with lots of great basketball being played.
Sixteen teams comprised of grades 4 and 5 students travelled to Pender Harbour Secondary School where these younger students have had the opportunity to play in a tournament format.
On April 3, the district’s grade 6/7 girls travelled to Chatelech Secondary School where the girls played a full day of basketball, under the excellent refereeing of the Chatelech high school officials, under Ellen Thomas.
Cedar Grove defeated Gibsons in the semifinal and then defeated Roberts Creek to bring home the hardware for 2015. West Sechelt retained the “B” flight trophy for the second season in a row.
The grade 6/7 boys’ tourney held at Elphinstone Secondary School and Gibsons Elementary School was again officiated well with the help of the high school athletes, and Clint Fox coordinating.
The “A” final was equally entertaining with the Roberts Creek ‘1’ team squeaking out a 19-12 win over Gibsons after knocking off the last year’s champs Cedar Grove.
The “B” flight final may have been the most exciting game of the day, as the two teams traded basket for basket, and foul for foul, with Roberts Creek ‘2’ hitting a buzzer beater to defeat West Sechelt 21-19.
The “C” flight champs, were the little Davis Bay “Tugs” who finally got to bring a trophy back to school after being close a number of times over the past three years. The “Tugs” pulled off a 10-point win, 22-12 over the Roberts Creek ‘3’ team.
Thanks to all the teachers and parent volunteers on a successful end to the basketball season. Schools will now be in full preparation for the annual district track and field meet to be hosted this year again at the Elphinstone track, tentatively set for Friday, June 5 with the high jump event scheduled for Chatelech Thursday June 4.
