Lisa Chell walks her talk and has been an inspiration to dozens of kids as well as many adults. She is passionate about swimming and communicating and has gone to great lengths to share her talents in Alberta and now B.C. She is visiting the Sunshine Coast from Nov. 5 to 7.
Chell shared her expertise with the Sechelt Junior Lifeguard Club (JLC) and the Pender Harbour JLC at the Sechelt Aquatic Centre on Thursday, Nov. 5. Club members and coaches learned about lifesaving sport at a club, provincial and national level.
JLC is new to Sechelt, but not the Coast, as the Pender Harbour club has been operating a non-competitive group for several years. The Sechelt club, named the Orcas, started in January 2009, with 11 members. In September the number grew to 20.
Long-time lifeguard and certified lifesaving instructor Liane Hansen is the coach of the team and her daughter Amber, also a certified lifesaving Instructor, is helping out with the large group this year. There is talk of a club starting at the Gibsons pool in the near future.
Chell is also a professional speaker and will be offering two business and personal growth workshops today (Friday) with proceeds to the JLC on the Coast. The first workshop, entitled Tongue Fu!, will focus on how to deflect, disarm and defuse verbal conflict using humour, while the second workshop ConZENtration, will focus on paying attention when life is filled with pressures, distractions and multiple priorities. To register call the Sunshine Coast Regional District at 604-885-6801 and press 1 or register on-line at www.scrd.ca. Group rates are available. Call Stacey Yasinowski, aquatic and fitness program co-ordinator, at 604-885-6823.
JLC is an action packed, unique alternative to those youth who love water and want more than just lessons. Participants in JLC will continue to learn stroke development as well as lifesaving skills in a fun, team-based environment.
Youths are encouraged to develop skills based on personal bests in swimming, lifesaving, fitness, knowledge, leadership and teamwork. The club provides high activity challenges in an energetic learning environment in the pool and on the deck.
