On Saturday, June 1 Davis Bay Doormaster hosted the inaugural Sunshine Coast men's over 50 Football Cup.
Thisoldtimers league has played together for 20 years and has attended several international organized tournaments in France and Spain, and is heading to Brazil for the World Cup.
One of the main goals of the Doormaster Cup is to accumulate donations of any new or used soccer shoes and shin pads (child's sizes three to 10) in good condition as well as uniforms. Once they've acquired their quota, the equipment is then shipped in barrels to the Carriacou Youth Soccer League of Grenada.
As our grizzled and grey squad faced off against their Vancouver opponents, it was an all-star ensemble of 1990s Coast soccer greats. Dave "Gordie Howe" Nanson towered above the opposition, with his height rival being nearby Mount Elphinstone. Cagey Englishman Dave Marsh brought some old-world charm to offset the Canadian grit of teammates like Paul Kusnir, whose game has definitely mellowed with age.
Glynn Cody made his first goaltending appearance since stonewalling the Wolves in the men's league 2012 soccer final, and looked as uppity as ever, though as usual, got caught off his line a few times.
Kevin August was unable to assume the striker's spot saved for him, as he was seen limping around Extra Foods after attempting a comeback at the Sechelt Indian Band's recent seven-a-side tournament. However, the star of the match, who has been begged by multiple squads to return to the regular league ever since he took up sailing, was Greg Korlikowski, who effortlessly placed three in the net.
An anonymous bystander gushed at his subtle, delicate footwork as befitting that of a princess.
Speedy Egg-monster Robin Millar -whose pace only seems to decrease maybe five mph per decade - also put one away, while Bob Stevens and Ben Goldberg set up Paul Munster for number five in the Coastal rout of these Mainland interlopers.
With the final whistle the two teams unwound with a barbecue, plans to do it again next year, and much appreciation by the Coast squad for the extremely fun day, in support of the good work the Doormaster Cup does for third world youth soccer.
