As the baseball season winds to an end for the Gibsons midget and bantam teams, the action on the fields has been heating up.
The bantam Devlins hosted the Burnaby South on Saturday and won 13-7 at Ryan Dempster Field.
On Sunday the Devlins were able to complete a rained-out doubleheader from earlier in the season and came up on the short end of both games.
Playing Saturday on the road, the bantam Maycon team came home with a 12-7 victory.
The big bantam game of the year was played at the Dempster on Thursday (past Coast Reporter's deadline) between the Maycon and Devlins teams, with the winners advancing in the interlock league playoffs.
For the Coastal Tires midget boys, the playoff season came to an end on Sunday when they split two games in Ladner.
Gibsons began their playoffs on Thursday, June 9, against their rivals from Sechelt. The hitters on both teams were stymied by dominant pitching, Dominic Acciarolli for Sechelt and David Diether for Gibsons. Dominic pitched the full seven innings, and his teammates were able to come from behind for a 2-1 win.
Needing to win their two games on Sunday to continue their playoff quest, Gibsons survived a seventh inning come back to pull out a 5-4 win over the Tsawwassen Yankees. The Hanchar boys led Gibsons as Chris pitched shutout ball into the seventh while Taylor led the offence with two hits.
Gibsons then had to move over to the Ladner field to take on the Cubs in their second game. The Cubs solid pitching and hitting resulted in a 6-3 victory.
The failure in the playoffs was a disappointment to the Gibsons boys and their supporters after their excellent first-place regular season. The team would like to thank their sponsors, Coastal Tires, and their fans for their support during the season and wish the Sechelt boys good luck in the playoffs this weekend.
