Gibsons Ryan Dempster is red hot and showing why the Texas Rangers traded for the right-hander in July.

Dempster won his fourth straight start with the Rangers to improve to 5-1 since his trade from the Cubs in the Rangers 7-6 win over the Kansas City Royals on Sept. 5.

He gave up RBI doubles to Billy Butler in the first and Salvador Perez in the sixth, but was otherwise untouchable for the AL West Division-leading Rangers. He allowed only two other hits in his six innings of work.

In his previous start, he picked up a 5-3 win over the Cleveland Indians on Aug. 31, again going six innings and allowing only two hits and one unearned run with seven punch-outs.

Dempster has allowed only five earned runs in his last 26 innings and has won five of his last six starts with a paltry 1.73 ERA in four of those starts.

U16 boys drop opener

The U16 boys Sunshine Coast United kicked off their 2012 gold division rep soccer season with a 3-0 defeat at South Burnaby Metro Strikers last Saturday.

Despite enjoying 75 per cent of the possession, United's strikers could not find their finishing touch, and even had a penalty kick saved by the Strikers' keeper.

Coach Gino Cayer, though, saw plenty to be pleased with. Confident ball control and crisp passing - the result of a lengthy pre-season of practices - saw United dominate long periods of the game. Greater positional sense and a killer instinct in front of goal will hopefully come with more games and more practices.

United is back in action tomorrow (Saturday) at home to Vancouver United Football Club. The game at Kinnikinnick kicks off at 1:30 p.m.

Coast golfer finishes second

Gibsons Cam McAllister finished in second spot in the boys 14 to 16 division at the latest stop on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour at the Pitt Meadows Golf Club Sept. 9.

Cam shot a 74 to finish two shots behind Cole Briggs of Langley for the division title.
