Gibsons Ryan Dempster had another solid outing on Friday afternoon, Aug. 5, leading the Chicago Cubs to a 4-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds.
The win was the second straight for the right-hander who improved to 9-8 on the season and sixth straight for the Cubs.
Dempster pitched six innings, allowing the two runs on only four hits. He struck out five, but walked six, which elevated his pitch count and forced him from the game after six innings, throwing 111 pitches.
Dempster started the winning streak beating the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 on Sunday night, July 31, and then the Cubs swept a four-game series from the Pirates in Pittsburgh.
CohoKings fourth in Squamish
The Gibsons CohoKings participated in the Squamish Days Loggers Sports annual fastball tournament on the August long weekend and came away with a fourth place finish in the eight-team tourney.
A win over the Vancouver Ravens and losses to the Squamish Wizards and Sar Majors in round robin play set up a first round playoff game with the Richmond Mariners. The Mariners are a young, strong team in the Vancouver Premier League. Gibsons had the best game of the tourney, and Mike Sopow pitched a very strong game in a 10-3 victory.
Gibsons then faced the Wizards in a semifinal match up, losing 9-2. The CohoKings had no answer for Travis Moyle's crafty pitching. Next up was a tough loss to the Vancouver Meralomas as Gibsons seemed to run out of steam, losing 8-3.
The next tournament for Gibsons will be in Kelowna in early September.
In local league action, the Aug. 3 games had the Gun Show handing the RJS Blue Jays an 11-8 defeat with Phil Gibb homering twice in a losing cause.
The Pirates continued their winning ways as they beat Custom Carpet 14-3.
On Aug. 5, the Gun Show edged Custom Carpet 11-9, while the Pirates remained undefeated with a 14-3 win over the Blue Jays. Chris Bell pitched a strong game while the Pirates' bats continued to pile up the runs.
