Ryan Dempster picked up his first win as a Texas Ranger, pitching shut-out ball into the sixth inning in the Rangers 6-3 win Tuesday night over the Boston Red Sox.
Leading 4-0 in the seventh inning, an error by Ian Kinsler opened the door for a pinch-hit, three-run homer from Will Middlebrooks, which spelled the end of Dempster's night. The Rangers bullpen held Boston from there, and the offence tacked on a pair of insurance runs.
Dempster's pitching line finished with three unearned runs on six hits, with six strikeouts and one walk in 6 2-3 innings.
Tuesday's start was a far cry from Dempster's Ranger debut on Aug. 2.
The right-hander from Gibsons was blasted for eight runs, his highest total this season, on nine hits with three walks and six strikeouts in 4 2-3 innings last Thursday night. The Rangers came back to bail Dempster out in the 15-9 win to split their four-game showdown with the Anaheim Angels.
SCMHA hosts opening day
On Sunday, Aug. 19, the Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey Association (SCMHA) is hosting an opening day celebration from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Gibsons and Area Community Centre, a full day designed to help kids and families prepare for the upcoming hockey season. This free community event will focus on fun and engaging activities, practical information, hockey clinics and a coaches' skills competition.
SCMHA opening day will include a hockey gear swap, concessions, information and registration, on-ice time for registered children, concussion testing information, acoaches' skills competitionat 5:45 p.m., prizes and more.

Struck fairs well at nationals
Last week Halfmoon Bay's Avery Struck competed at the Canadian National junior golf championships in Calgary.
The weather was great for the first two days and saw Avery score 81 and 82 making the cut of 128 golfers at 54.
The weather turned for the worse and all golfers were challenged.
Avery finished up with an impressive 70th place finish in her first national tournament.
