One word describes Ryan Dempster's start June 29 against the San Francisco Giants - dominant.

The Chicago Cubs right-hander was in total control, up 1-0 and retiring 20 straight batters heading into the ninth inning where he allowed only two hits, with no walks and six strikeouts on a mere 78 pitches. He gave up a lead-off bloop double to Pat Burrell and was pulled in favour of closer Carlos Marmol who failed to close the game as the Giants tied the game. The Cubs were able to win it in the bottom of the ninth for the 2-1 win. Dempster, in his best outing of the season, is still stuck with a record of 5-6.

Dempster was scratched from his scheduled start on Monday, July 4, in Washington with back and stomach pain. He was listed as day to day and may pitch this weekend for the Cubs prior to the all-star break which starts on Monday.
