Elphinstone senior girls volleyball team travelled to UBC Okanagan on the weekend of Oct. 6 and 7. This was a 40-team tournament with teams from all over B.C.After pool play on Friday, and wins against Penticton, SaHali from Kamloops and Immaculata from Kelowna, the girls finished first in their pool. This put them up against Vernon Saturday morning, whom they beat 2-0. They next played Mt. Sentinel (Slocan) and decisively beat them 2-0. This put Elphinstone in the semi-finals against Kelowna Secondary.
After dropping the second set, they rallied back to win the third, 15-7. The finals put them against Kelowna Christian, the one team they lost to at UBC two weeks ago. With strong serving and net play, they won 2-0. Hailey Perry and Devon May were named to the all-star team, and Michelle Jakzuk was tournament MVP.
The Senior Cougars also continue to be atop their league division, winning all four matches.
The girls are looking forward to their annual fundraiser, Cougar Camp, a volleyball camp at Elphinstone on Friday, Oct. 19. The camp is open to girls and boys in grades 5 to 8 and the cost is $60, which includes a T-shirt. Registration can be done on-line at scsoe.ca or at any school office. All proceeds go to the senior girls volleyball team at Elphinstone to help cover the costs of travel.
