The Elphinstone Cougars remain in the hunt for a post season berth after splitting a pair of league games last week.
The senior boys lost 67-37 to Collingwood on Wednesday but battled back, putting in a solid road effort on Thursday with a 64-60 win over Bodwell. Elphi is 3-4 in league play with three league games remaining on their schedule. They host Mulgrave on Feb. 1. Tip-off is slated for 4:45 p.m. in Gibsons. The Cougars then hit the road for their final two games on Feb. 7 against Sentinel and Feb. 12 against Windsor.
Elphi was in Nanaimo for a tournament last weekend and won their division with a 3-1 record.
Elphi coach Mike Sopow was pleased with his team's effort throughout the week.
"We didn't play a great game against Collingwood, but the guys responded against Bodwell," Sopow said. "We were down 15 and made a nice comeback to win by four. It was a good character win for us. In Nanaimo, we suffered quite a few injuries, so our bench players had to step up and perform. They did big time. The game we lost was only by three points and we were down 20 in that game and charged back. Going into the final stretch the guys seem to all be playing with a lot of confidence and it's nice to see the bench players step up and contribute."
Sopow noted Trevor Hatful and Scott Ewen as top performers at the tournament.
The Chatelech Eagles senior boys didn't play last week. They were in Squamish to play Howe Sound yesterday (Thursday). Results were not available at press time. The Eagles play host to Seycove on Tuesday set for a 5 p.m. tip-off in Sechelt.
In senior girls play, the Cougars dropped both their games last week to slip to 0-6 in league play. Collingwood beat Elphi 58-21 on Tuesday and Bodwell edged the Cougars 38-29 on Wednesday.
The Eagles also had a tough week as they dropped a 47-19 decision on Jan. 16 to St. Thomas Aquinas. The team is 0-6 in league play.
In junior girls action, Chat lost 49-8 to Sutherland on Jan. 17 to slip to 0-6 in league play. Chat plays Handsworth next Wednesday on the road.
In juvenile boys action, Elphi lost 63-25 to West Vancouver on Jan. 17 to slip to 0-2 in league play.
Chat is 1-1 in league play after they dropped a 65-43 decision to Sentinel on Jan. 19.
